National Cooling Strategy Kickoff Event

National Cooling Strategy Kickoff in Jordan

20 March, 2023

The Jordanian Ministry of Environment in cooperation with the Royal Scientific Society and the participation of the Cool Up project’s partners from Guidehouse, Öko-Recherche and the United Nations Development Program, launched the kick off of the National Cooling Strategy in Jordan on 20th, March,2023.

The steering committee responsible for developing the national cooling strategy in Jordan discussed the initial cooling action plan and the methodology of the strategy. They have also set the goals and topics to mainstream the concept of sustainable cooling in Jordan.

The NCS serves as a guidance to support the transition towards sustainable cooling practices and promoting the use of non-halogenated, environment-friendly refrigerants. The objective of the NCS is to identify priority interventions based on a sector-wise current and future cooling demand assessment to address Jordan’s growing cooling needs. It includes different cooling-related sectors such as stationary refrigeration and air conditioning (AC), industrial cooling, mobile refrigeration and service sector. Preliminary sector assessment based on Jordan HFC inventory shows that more than 60% of the direct emissions result from domestic and commercial AC and refrigeration. In Jordan, it is expected that in the current trends, in particular, the AC stock will grow by a factor of 5 until 2050.

The NCS also set the basis for developing a National Cooling Action Plan (NCAP), which will be elaborated in a subsequent step.

Cool Up is part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI). The German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUV) supports this initiative on the basis of a decision adopted by the German Bundestag.
