Eng. Firas Alawneh
Director, National Energy Research Centre
Eng. Firas Alawneh currently serves as the Director of the National Energy Research Centre (NERC), a specialized center within the Royal Scientific Society's sustainable solutions sector. NERC is actively involved in research, consulting, development, and training in renewable energy and energy efficiency fields, and elevating energy standards across various sectors, with a focus on promoting renewable energy adoption in Jordan and the MENA region. The center also plays an essential role in energy planning, policy development, and the development of clean technology and energy efficiency projects.
In his position, Eng. Alawneh is responsible for overseeing NERC's operations and financial performance. He formulates and implements business strategies, ensures compliance with legal requirements, and leads teams. Eng. Alawneh holds a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from Jordan University of Science and Technology and has been a part of RSS since 1994.
Throughout his career, Eng. Alawneh has primarily worked in the field of renewable energy and energy efficiency, with a particular emphasis on Photovoltaic (PV) systems. His experience included designing and installing numerous off-grid and on-grid PV systems, conducting laboratory testing and simulation of PV systems, and working on solar radiation measurement and evaluations. He has also served as a trainer and consultant in the PV field in Jordan and has actively participated in various international projects related to renewable energy and energy efficiency. From 2005 to 2015, he managed the Photovoltaics (PV) Division at NERC and subsequently worked as an industrial professor at the Energy Engineering Department at the German Jordanian University from 2015 to 2023.
